Where was Lupin Filmed Starring Omar Sy on Netflix?

Lupin is the latest international hit on Netflix, a five-episode first season inspired by the French literary character, Arsène Lupin, “The Gentleman Burgler.” While the books about Lupin were written in the early 20th century, Lupin is set in present-day Paris. There is no actual Arsène Lupin in this show, but the character serves as the inspiration behind Assane Diop, played by Omar Sy (who came to international fame in Intouchables).

Many of the filming locations are are set in Paris, but Lupin is also filmed in the surrounding Paris region as well as in Normandy. Lupin is set up as a caper with a daring heist of an expensive necklace, once belonging to Marie Antoinette, that is being auctioned off after being on display at the Louvre Museum. The show films extensively in the Louvre, in the galleries that contain some of the museum’s most famous paintings (the Mona Lisa, the Delacrois painting of Liberty Leading the People), as well as below the I.M. Pei-designed glass pyramid.

We learn through flashbacks that Assane is the son of a Senegalese immigrant and single father, growing up in the banlieues (the urban suburbs) of Paris (which are filmed in .Trappes in Yvelines, outside of Paris near Versailles) His father, Babakar, takes a job as a chauffeur for a ridiculously rich Parisian family, the Pellegrinis, whose members are varying degrees of overtly racist. The Pellegrinis live in a fancy mansion near the Parc Monceau in Paris. Additional filming in Paris take place at the Jardin du Luxembourg, in the flea markets at Les Puces, near the Porte Saint Martin, at the town hall in the third arrondissement, at the Pont des Arts, and near Bastille.
